In a move to help those businesses that have been affected by the pandemic, the city of San Jose has decided to open parks and plazas for outdoor operations.

The city council approved the expansion of the “San Jose Al Fresco” program and is allowing hair salons, restaurants and fitness studios to operate in some of the city’s public outdoor spaces.

“We’re waiving all fees and applications for doing it because we really want our businesses to stay open and survive,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo.

City plazas where businesses may set up include Fountain Valley, Hammer Theater Plaza and the Circle of Palms.

The first parking lot that will be available for businesses to stake a claim will be in Willow Glen. Any business that are within a quarter-mile of that area are eligible for a spot on a “first come, first serve” basis.

What do you think of this move by the city?
