Still in a state of shock over the info we had this morning.
The BIG mark up on movie food….as if we didn’t already know this.
But to see the actual numbers.
Let’s say a large bucket of popcorn sells for $8. It costs the movie theaters 90 cents.
A large soda sells for what? $6. It costs them 51 cents…and that covers the cup, lid and straw.
And a box of candy sells for what? $4.25…it costs the movie theater around $2.
So when I go to the movies I start with $20. The ticket is usually 10-50…and then with my small popcorn and medium coke zero at 9:50…there goes my $20.
I have a friend who years ago worked for one of the big fast food chains in the accounting department. He would never order an iced tea when we’d go to dinner and one time I asked him why. He said he couldn’t because he always remembered it cost 2 cents for that iced tea yet they sold it for $3.
Just what is your rule about getting rid of your old clothes?
My daughter Victoria tries to get rid of something every time she buys something new…so one comes in…one goes out.
She’s supposed to do it with shoes too. I’m not sure she really does…LOL!!
If you saw my closets and drawers you know I don’t do this so we will just move on…
So see if you agree with these.
We mentioned them this morning.
You are to get rid of clothes that are stained, smell old, damaged beyond repair…like Sam’s shirts that are frayed at the elbow.
If you were out shopping right now, would you buy it? No ..it goes!!!
It doesn’t convey the message you want. No..I don’t want to look like a frump!!!
You equate it with bad memories.
It’s not trendy anymore.
You keep trying it on…but never go out of the house with it on.
It’s totally stretched out or pilled….which isn’t that far from damaged beyond repair.
And when are we going shopping to replace all of that stuff you’re giving away?
Good stuff today in the Southbay.
People finding hidden cash like our very own Layna Thom.
$100 she found at the Greyhound Bus Station just a block away from KBAY.
And the ever growing support for a San Jose family in need thanks to Police Officer Huan Nguyen.
This was today’s “Isn’t it Nice Story at 6:40…but it is so worth repeating.
It was May 6th when 37 year old bus driver Phuoc Lam was shot and killed in a road rage incident right outside his mobile home park…The gunman has yet to be caught.
Phuoc was a hard working man with not a penny in a savings account. He worked 7 days a week to support his wife and 2 little boys, one who’s autistic. So when he was killed, there was no money coming in…not for food…rent…clothes …
Officer Huan Nguyen was one of the investigating cops. Like the Lams he is a Vietnamese immigrant and he has two kids but unlike the Lams he was in a position to help. He started texting his friends and then his fellow officers asking for donations. He hoped to raise a few thousand dollars.
That was 3 weeks ago…Officer Nguyen has now raised $100,000 for the Lams….most if not all of it from complete strangers.
If you’re in the giving mood and able…here’s the website….YouCaring.com/SanJose15Homocide. Yes, sadly Lam is the 15th homicide victim of the year in San Jose. Luckily his widow has a forever friend in Huan Nguyen!!
There are stories in life that make you so darn sad.
Like the one from this weekend in Isle Vista. If we could only go back in time on that one
And re-do all the mistakes that were made pertaining to 22 year old Eliot Rodger.
But that’s a whole different matter.
I was about to say there are stories in life that also make you happy.
And the one we shared this morning about 99 year old Jessie White of Belfast, Maine is among the best…
Guarantees a smile!!
She went to Beal College in 1939…and studied- what else- stenography and bookkeeping.
She took all the classes but didn’t get her degree because she couldn’t afford the $5 transcript/diploma fee.
So this year, she was chatting with a friend……telling the story of how she regretted not getting her diploma. So that friend called the current president of Beal College….Allen Stehle….and he took care of it.
He paid the $5 fee himself…and then hosted a special graduation ceremony for Jessie…to give her a diploma.
75 years later…she got it!!!
Like I said there are stories in life that make you happy and make you smile.
Sadly though they often get overshadowed by those “other stories”…the Eliot Rodgers of the world.
So excited for this Memorial Day weekend..
So excited to be on the move with Christina and Ryan as we look
for their wedding site. She’s got a list of 7 places all lined up.
Hopefully you have some fun stuff planned too.
Just take some time on Monday to remember why we have the Memorial Day holiday.
I have gone to the ceremony at Oak Hill Memorial Park and it really is great.
There will even be a military fly over this coming Monday at 11.
But this weekend does mark the unofficial start to summer. Summer itself doesn’t start till June 21st…
Sam and I have already made our summer plans…Disneyland for me…Hawaii for him.
But there are a lot of great local places to stop by as well…Great America, Raging Waters, Gilroy Gardens, Winchester Mystery House…and on and on and on..
I so love this area we call home. We do have the best of the best.
Don’t know if you saw Sal Pizarro’s column today. Sometimes its online- which is how I read it- one day and the next its actually in the Mercury News. I adore him. He is such an ambassador for Silicon Valley and one of the nicest guys I know. He got surprised the other day with the Hospitality Achievement Award from the Silicon Valley Concierge Association. I didn’t even know we had one of those…but they made some great choices for all of their awards including:
Best annual event…Christmas in the Park
Best performing arts- San Jose Rep
Best attraction- SJ Sharks
Best Museum-Children’s Discovery
Best casual restaurant- Poor House Bistro
Best Lounge/Bar- Hotel De Anza’s Hedley Club
Two favorite topics this morning… annoying drivers…and signs you’re getting old!!!
And we live with both every single day, don’t we?
So just who is the most annoying driver now?
The driver who texts, e mails or talks on the cell while driving.
They’re just slightly ahead of tailgaters.
But this was the really good news…that you don’t turn old until you’re 80.
Such a relief…LOL!!!
Although I’m afraid some of the signs you are getting old do seem to appear way before 80.
Are you now ready for the bad news?
The ten signs you’re getting old….even if you’re not close to 80.
1. You fall asleep watching TV or reading the paper.
2. You start forgetting things.
3. You groan when you get out of a chair or bed.
4. You say, "Back in my day."
5. You pick clothes for comfort instead of style.
6. You repeat yourself.
7. You don't recognize popular music.
8. You swear things aren't where they used to be.
9. You pick places to eat because the music isn't that loud.
10. You take afternoon naps.
Didn’t get to spend a lot of time on this today…so for future reference…LOL
Here are the things that just drive you crazy at work (just in case you haven’t been able to put your finger on itwe’re here for you.)
1. Being copied on emails that aren't relevant.
2. Phone calls right when you're ready to leave for the day.
3. Your computer crashing.
4. The office being too hot or cold.
5. The printer breaking down.
6. Coworkers with BODY ODOR.
7. Coworkers who talk too loudly on the phone.
8. People talking too much.
9. Coworkers not cleaning the microwave.
10. The sounds of coworkers sniffing.
11. People reading emails over your shoulder.
12. People not replacing an empty toilet paper roll.
13. Coworkers not saying "thank you" when you hold the door for them.
14. People with bad breath.
15. Corporate buzzwords.
16. Inconsiderate parking.
17. When coworkers make food that stinks.
18. Uncomfortable office chairs.
19. People who book their days off around holiday weekends way in advance.
20. Your boss catching you when you're on Facebook for one minute during a hectic day.
I counted 9 that really tick me off. How many did you get? And is there one one that was overlooked?
That time of year…graduation!!
I love graduations…you too?
I don’t even care if my kids are graduating…I just love the day. I try to make it every year to the graduation at Presentation High School. Principal Mary Miller always gives a wonderful good by to the girls with some great words of wisdom. Jeff’s daughter graduated this weekend at Pepperdine and while the speaker wasn’t the best I’ve heard the day was just wonderful.
Here’s a speaker who was wonderful…Actress Sandra Bullock. She spoke to graduating seniors at Warren Easton Charter High School in New Orleans which she adopted after Hurricane Katrina. She has since given thousands of dollars but what she said yesterday was priceless.
"You have to dance a little bit before you step out in the world, because it changes the way you walk . . . Eat something green every day . . . Do not pick your nose in public . . . How about we just go get a tissue? . . .
"When someone who cares about you hugs you, hug them back with two arms . . .
"If someone doesn't want to play with you, it's okay. Not everyone is going to love us . . .
"And last but not least go find your joy. It's what you're going to remember in the end. It's not the worry; it's not the what-ifs. It's the joy that stays with you. And I want to thank you for the joy that Warren Easton brings me every day."
So great. I love that she spoke in simple terms…and hit all the basics…especially the part about finding your own joy!
Your commencement address like mine was probably ages and ages again. Actually, I didn’t even go to my college graduation. I would have been so mad at my girls if they did that, but my parents for some reason let it go. But what about your commencement speech…...any life lessons you still remember? http://www.facebook.com/SamVanZandtKBAY https://www.facebook.com/KBAYlissa
Was sitting in LAX for hours yesterday. Our plane left 90 minutes late and sadly we got there two hours early…so a lot of boring sitting around time. My four magazines didn’t last very long and we had already eaten. So I did a lot of people watching...and every one was on their phone even people with people were on their phones.
What the heck did we do before we had phones to look at? What the heck did we do before we had FB on our phones? Seriously, I guess we just read.
But with the time we all spend now on FB, I think we need to post the 9 unwritten rules. We went over them this morning…. Take a count. How many of these do you break? And what rule needs to be added?
Only post things you know your friends really want to see. (this one we may need to ignore.)
Posts about religion, politics and your workouts need to be blocked.
Never like your own posts.
Don’t be a stalker. Its never good when you get caught. And I guess this is why sometimes photos turn up months, even years after you posted them because some stalker liked an old photo. Yep…a stalker looking deep into your page!!!
Don’t have a conversation in the comments section. That’s why you text!!
Keep virtual PDA to a minimum. I don’t see a lot of this.
Don’t post every selfie you take. I don’t post any. They’re all so bad!!!
Don’t make people guess what’s bothering you
Don’t invite friends to play all your games online. Especially if her name is Lissa…LOL
I think we’re still laughing over this.
The survey from this morning that the average woman spends 6 hours getting ready for that big date that could lead to
Woopie!! Did I spell that right..LOL
So what takes time?
Getting her hair done and not eating carbs at dinner so her stomach is as flat as possible.
Buying new lingerie or undies.
Waxing, getting a facial, tanning, buying a new dress, getting a manicure and or pedicure, and getting new sheets.
What about the guy…how long does he take getting ready for the ”big night”.
Sam and I guessed maybe ten minutes for a shower and change of clothes!!!
Takes you back in time doesn’t it?
And to finish this off from today…the ten worst summer fashion mistakes:
Socks with sandals of course
A bad fake tan, where you can see streaks
Wearing a bathing suit that’s too small
Having a beer belly.
Clothes with the American flag on them.
Obvious tan lines
Wearing a lot of make up to the beach
Accidentally tucking the back of your skirt into your underwear…huh?
Letting yourself get so sunburned you peel.
And I always like the one where I go to a place like Dis
neyland and some one is wearing shorts and stilettos. http://www.facebook.com/SamVanZandtKBAY https://www.facebook.com/KBAYlissa
Forget getting a dog, or a cat or even a bird.
Apparently the big thing now is raising chickens.
Saw this morning that all the stars are putting chicken coops in their backyards. Can you call a ranch a backyard?
Reese Witherspoon, Oprah, Giselle Bundchen, Jennifer Anniston even Barbra Streisand and Martha Stewart are all raising chickens. I guess for the eggs.
We used to have a chicken in our backyard…and this was a real backyard..not a ranch. For one of my brothers school projects, we hatched an egg in our homemade incubator. I think we had 8 or 9 eggs..and just one hatched. My Dad kept the chick which of course grew into a chicken and became his best little buddy. My Dad every morning would go out to the “coop” and get an egg. Well, he did every day until my Mom innocently put down snail bait in hopes of saving her garden. . I don’t know if the snails ate it, but the chicken did. Yep, the chicken laid one last egg and then died. My Dad was so sad.
And that I guess is the story of the chicken that laid the egg at the Kreisler house!!!
Do teachers still have kids try and hatch an egg at home? I don’t think we did it with my girls. Because after all what do you do with the chick after it’s born? And let me tell you ….chickens like rabbits poop a lot.
Are you a complainer when you go to a hotel?
The room isn’t quite good enough or the location is just a tad bit too far from the lobby, or maybe too close to the elevator. In fact, what was the last thing you complained about at a hotel. It only counts if you actually complained to the front desk.
Look at these….actual complaints given to hotel staff.
1. "The sheets are too white."
2. "The sea is too blue."
3. "The ice cream you served is too cold."
4. "The bathtub is too big."
5. "My girlfriend wouldn't stop snoring so I couldn't get to sleep."
6. "My dog didn't like his stay."
7. "The hotel didn't have an ocean view" . . . but the hotel was landlocked.
8. "There's no steak on the vegetarian menu."
9. "The waiter was too handsome."
10. "The mother of the groom didn't get the honeymoon suite."
We were talking pet peeves this morning…and which ones were worse.
Sam has a thing about rude drivers. I go crazy over people who misuse “reply all” on e mails.
So lets she what gets you going.
Harris Poll did a survey…listing 2 similar pet peeves and people had to decide which one was more annoying.
1 Plane etiquette- What’s worse? People who hog the overhead bins or people who recline their seats?
Overhead bins won out.
2.Bad driving- What’s worse? Tailgaters or slow drivers in the left lane? Tailgaters won.
3.Cell Phones- What’s worse? Loud phone calls in public or people who check their phones while talking to you?
Loud callers won.
4. E mails-What’worse? People who always REPLY ALL or people who don’t reply at all. Reply all won. (thank you)
5.Social media- What’s worse? Excessive complaining on things like FB or excessive bragging? Complaining won!!!
6.Parenting- What’s worse? Parents who let their kids run wild or people who give unsolicited advice to parents? No contest…parents with wild kids.
7.Grammar- What’s worse? People who misuse common words or people who correct them? People who misuse words won.
8. Lateness- What’s worse? People who are always late or people who get mad that you’re late? No contest….people who are always late.
And finally the one perfect for today and tomorrow.
9. Temperature- What’s worse? People who complain it’s too hot or people who complain it’s too cold?
Hate to tell you…its people complaining about the heat. But I’m giving you a pass on this one!!! And why…
BECAUSE IT REALLY IS TOO HOT!!! LOL!!!
Broke the news this morning that Parenthood has been cancelled by NBC..but not until after one last season…
I guess we fans should be grateful it’s been on for as long as it has…as at the end of every season, it’s on the possible chopping block. It just never was able to get enough viewers..although I blame NBC. They never gave it a good lead in. It was always on at ten when it is really a family show that could be watched at 8 and they never really promoted it. And to make matters worse for the last season, the cast has agreed to cuts so each character will only be in 9 of the 13 episodes.
So what else will be disappearing? Parks and Recreation also after one last season.
Plus Growing up Fisher, Believe, Crisis, Dracula, and Revolution. I hadn’t even heard of these.
For CBS…They’ve cancelled The Crazy Ones, Hostages, Friends with Better Lives, Bad Teacher and Intelligence.
ABC – I didn’t see any cancellation notices, just renewals for Shark Tank, the Bachelor, America’s Funniest Home Videos (25 seasons now) and Dancing with the Stars. Last Man Standing with Tim Allen was renewed…and hold your breath….Nashville has been renewed…yep given a reprieve…and will be back for another 22 episodes. Yeah for that one!!! I love Nashville!!!
So my TV-holic fans….what do you think?
And what about Barbara Walters? She’s retiring (sort of) You know even at 85, she will continue doing interviews for ABC!!
But it’s an official send off on ABC this Friday. In fact the NY Mayor has declared it Barbara Walters Day
Thursday is the day I want to DVR The View.
All the former and current co hosts will be on…and yes I mean ALL!!! http://www.facebook.com/SamVanZandtKBAY https://www.facebook.com/KBAYlissa
Mothers Day….it can be the best day of the year.
It can be the worst day of the year. Yes, it’s so tough when this day comes around and you don’t have a Mom to celebrate with. Mine has been gone for almost 25 years. Yes, she died young, very young. And it can also be the worst day if you’re longing to be a Mom and just can’t conceive. I’ve lived through that too. Although look at me now…2 beautiful daughters. So I know it’s a tough day for many and like Valentines Day there really is no escaping it. So I feel your pain and your sadness.
But for me, at least, when I became a Mom, this did turn into my most favorite day of the year…not so much because of what my girls might say and do for me but because I get to look at them and say to myself…WOW, I played a role in turning two people into giving, caring, smart young women. Yes, like so many of you I was /am the animal caretaker, the frozen food chef, financial manager, food beverage service worker, general office clerk, nurse, management analyst, child care worker, housekeeper, psychologist, bus driver, school principal, dietician/nutritionist, property manager, social worker and recreation worker . In other words, I was/am a Mom!!!
(Did I miss anything)
When isn’t it a good day to talk about pet peeves?
I was looking at this Harris Poll this morning. 2200 people were asked their most annoying pet peeves
And you’re not going to believe what almost everyone put as number one…
Disruptive children. Oh, give me a break!!!!. I guess these people have never had kids before. Kids misbehave at times….they’re kids. It’s disruptive adults I would like to complain about!!!
Also annoying to America- openly rude people, slobs and people who are chronically late. Loud talkers too.
Okay….now things we like….Is Modern Family not the best this season? I can’t wait for the wedding!!!
And I sure like this….that Will Farrell is working on an animated Flinstones Movie.
But this is the very best “like” of the day….Sam has again been nominated to the Bay Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame. And if there is anyone who belongs in that group of great broadcasters it is him. Hopefully this will be his year!!!! http://www.facebook.com/SamVanZandtKBAY https://www.facebook.com/KBAYlissa
So how many of these do you watch?
Here are last weeks top ten shows and in this order. (18-49 age group)
Big Bang Theory, The Voice, Modern Family, The Voice (Tuesday nite) Blacklist,
Dancing with the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, Survivor and Shark Tank.
Miss TV here watches 4. I may have to give up my title although I am slightly out of the demographic. Well not so slight. I’m almost ten years out of that 18-49 demo…LOL.
When you look at the TV ratings overall…2 plus they call them…..NCIS is the most watched show, DWTS moves up the Voice moves down and Blue Bloods comes in at #5. Love Blue Bloods. I May even love Donnie Wahlberg more than Tom Selleck. But they’re all great on that show.
And have you watched Blacklist? It is interesting. I’m not sure if I like it or not. But I’ve watched it for two weeks now. It’s different, that’s for sure.
As for American Idol. It’s finally down to the last four. I bet I don’t even last a full hour tonite. I haven’t yet. I did read this morning that Jena Asciutto is now the favorite to win…with Caleb Johnson runner up. Have you noticed for weeks now they don’t announce at the beginning of the Thursday show how many votes were counted. This has got to be the last season, don’t you think? http://www.facebook.com/SamVanZandtKBAY https://www.facebook.com/KBAYlissa
So do we all agree on this?
Dancing should never have had that Dance Mom Judge last nite.
They had to hear plenty this morning.
I’m not really sure why they felt they needed guest judges anyway this season.
The dancers are fabulous this season and the show really moves.
Now…the thing that really had us laughing this morning.
The things you really need to stop doing in public bathrooms.
Don’t look through the crack into a stall. I guess its okay to look underneath to see if there are legs.
Don’t talk to strangers about anything.
Guys need to pick the urinal further away from someone else.
Women at the sink washing, need to hurry if someone is in a stall and not peeing. That means they want you to hurry and leave.
Wipe the seat if you splashed on it. That’s my big thing!!
And flush and flush again if you have to.
After a weekend at home with the kids and hubby this is always a great question to ask
The top four things you wish your husband would do.
See if these are yours…
Empty the dishwasher
Ask for directions
Put the Toilet Seat Down.
Sound about right…LOL
And what about this also from this morning? TV theme songs that always get stuck in your head.
You’ve got to be old to know these.
The Andy Griffith Show, the original Hawaii 5-0. The Brady Bunch, Cheers, Bonanza, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Gilligans Island, the Jeffersons, the Flintstones and the Addams Family.
Never understand why all of these surveys and we see them all the time, are never updated. Look how old most of these shows are. I guess part of the problem is theme songs were way more popular back then…
What would be a current show where the music sticks with you? All I can think of is the tune from Modern Family.
What’s another show with a catchy theme song?
We joked about this today…but I don’t think it’s such a bad idea. But then I don’t golf!! Hopefully you do, so I’ll ask you.
Is there anything wrong with making the holes bigger so the game is easier? I didn’t know this but a traditional golf hole has a diameter that’s 4 and a half inches. But with the number of golfers actually down by about 5 million from ten years ago , about 100 courses in the U-S and Canada have tripled the size of a hole to 8, 12 or even 15 inches.
And I’ll ask again is that so bad? Don’t know if it would help me at all….as it still takes 2 3 or even 4 strokes…or in my case, 5,6,7 or 8 to even get close enough to the hole.
Too bad too…as I so wanted to learn golf. I had clubs special made because I’m short. I had the cutest outfits, but after going through three pros I decided this was not the sport for me. And since then I’ve learned there is no sport for me. I am a spectator. But I’m a good spectator. I know how to do this very well!!!
I guess that’s why I’m so good at TV…I know how to “sit”.
BTW…about TV…the networks are discussing cancellations.
USA Today has just done a Save Our Shows survey. I don’t know if these three shows are really on the chopping block…but they are the ones that viewers are most concerned about saving….… Law and Order SUV,
Parenthood and Nashville. Among the shows people wouldn’t mind seeing cancelled are Beauty and the Beast on the CW,Mixology on ABC and Dads on FOX.. http://www.facebook.com/SamVanZandtKBAY https://www.facebook.com/KBAYlissa
